                                   ARTICLES


  • The words 'a' , 'an' and 'the' are called articles.
  • 'A'  and 'and' means one.
  • We use the article 'a' :
          ( a ) to mean one person as ' a chef ', one animal 
                  as in ' a fish ' and one object as in ' a spoon '.
          ( b ) before words starting with a consonant 
                  sound ( c, s, m, b, w, t, f, k, etc ) or a ' u ' sound.


examples:
                  a ruler , a desk , a pail , a message , a unicorn , 
                  a school , a bench , a house , a pencil , a clock
  
  • We use the articles ' an ' :
          ( a ) to mean, one person as in ' an Indian boy ', 
              one animal as in ' an elephant ' and one 
              object as in ' an umbrella '.
          ( b ) before word starting with vowel sound
               ( a, e, i, o, u ) or a silent 'h' sound.


examples:
 
           an apple ,  an eagle , an iron , an oar , an uncle ,
           an axe , an eraser , an ink bottle , an orange , an hour



  • We use the articles ' the ' :
          ( a ) to describe something which is the only one 
              of its kind as in  ' the moon 'and ' the sky ' .
          ( b ) to means one objects as in the ' the moon ' 
              or more than one object as in ' the stars.
          ( c ) for something that is mentioned the second time

    an axe , an eraser , an ink bottle , an orange , an hour
